Every home barista should be familiar with the following tools, each playing a crucial role in the coffee-making process:
Espresso Machine & Grinder
Espresso Machine: The heart of the setup. Understanding its functions, from pulling shots to steaming milk, is essential.

Grinder: A high-quality burr grinder is non-negotiable. The grind size directly impacts the extraction and flavor.

Tamping & Dosing
Tamper: Used to compress the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter. Proper tamping ensures a consistent shot.

WDT Tool (Weiss Distribution Technique): A tool with fine needles used to break up clumps and distribute coffee grounds evenly before tamping.

Dosing Funnel: Sits on top of the portafilter to prevent coffee grounds from spilling during grinding and WDT.

Scale: Crucial for measuring the weight of coffee grounds and the final espresso shot to ensure consistency.

Milk Steaming & Latte Art
Milk Pitcher: A stainless steel pitcher is used to steam milk. Different sizes are available for various drinks.

Thermometer: Helps in achieving the perfect milk temperature for sweetness and texture.

Cleaning & Maintenance
Knock Box: A container for knocking out used coffee pucks from the portafilter.

Backflush Cleaner: A specialized cleaner used for backflushing the espresso machine’s group head to remove coffee oils and residue.

Optional/Advanced Tools
Portafilter: While it comes with the machine, many baristas upgrade to a bottomless portafilter to better observe the espresso extraction.

Distributor Tool: An alternative or supplement to the WDT tool for distributing the coffee grounds.
