Essential Cleaning Products
Espresso Machine Cleaning Detergent: Look for products specifically designed for espresso machines, like Urnex Cafiza tablets or powder. These are formulated to break down coffee oils.
Descaling Solution: A descaler is used to remove mineral buildup from the internal components. You can use a commercial descaling solution, or in some cases, a diluted solution of citric acid or white vinegar (check your machine’s manual first, as vinegar can damage some parts).
Group Head Cleaning Brush: A small brush with stiff bristles is perfect for scrubbing the group head.
Blind Portafilter Basket (or Backflush Disk): This is a filter basket with no holes. It’s essential for the “backflushing” process. Many machines come with a rubber or metal disk for this purpose.

Cleaning Cloths: Have separate cloths for wiping down the exterior and the steam wand.
Screwdriver: A short, stubby flathead screwdriver may be needed to remove the group head screen for a deep clean.
Daily Cleaning (After Each Use)
- Empty and Clean the Portafilter: As soon as you finish pulling a shot, knock the used coffee grounds (the “puck”) into a knock-box or trash can. The grounds are easiest to remove when they’re still warm. Rinse the portafilter and wipe it clean with a dry cloth or paper towel.
- Rinse the Group Head: After removing the portafilter, run a “blank shot”—a shot without any coffee grounds for a few seconds. This flushes out any loose grounds and oils from the group head and shower screen.
- Purge and Wipe the Steam Wand: This is critical. Immediately after frothing milk, release a short burst of steam to clear any milk residue from inside the wand. Then, wipe the exterior of the wand with a damp cloth. This prevents milk from drying and clogging the steam holes.

Weekly Cleaning
A. Backflushing (if your machine has this capability):
- Remove the regular filter basket from your portafilter and insert the blind portafilter basket.
- Add a small amount of espresso machine cleaning powder (about half a teaspoon) or one cleaning tablet to the blind basket.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head.
- Run the machine for about 5-10 seconds to build pressure, then stop and allow the water and cleaner to be expelled into the drip tray.
- Repeat this process 3-5 times.
- Remove the portafilter, rinse the blind basket, and re-insert it without any cleaner.
- Run several more cycles to thoroughly rinse the machine and ensure no detergent residue remains. You can also run a “sacrificial” shot of espresso with old or cheap coffee to ensure the next shot is free of any cleaning product taste.

B. Soak the Portafilter and Baskets:
- Fill a container with hot water and add some espresso machine cleaning detergent.
- Disassemble the portafilter (remove the basket and any spring) and place the metal parts in the solution. Do not submerge any plastic or wooden handles, as the chemicals can damage them.
- Let them soak for 20-30 minutes.
- Scrub everything with a sponge or brush to remove any remaining grime, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.
C. Clean the Group Head and Shower Screen:
- Use your group head cleaning brush to scrub around the interior of the group head and the visible shower screen. You can also run a little water through the machine while scrubbing to help dislodge any gunk.
- For a deeper clean, you can unscrew the shower screen and soak it in the same cleaning solution as the portafilter. Use the brush to clean the area behind the screen before reattaching it.

Monthly/Bi-Monthly Cleaning
- Prepare the Descaling Solution: Follow the instructions on your descaling product. If using a natural solution.
- Run the Cycle: Fill your machine’s water tank with the descaling solution. Run the brew cycle without coffee grounds, allowing the solution to flow through the group head and steam wand. Collect the solution in a container.
- Rinse Thoroughly: After running the descaling solution, empty the tank and refill it with fresh, clean water. Run several more cycles to flush out all the descaler from the system.
Make sure you take care on your Espresso machine, it will save you money and improve your Coffee taste.
